Banning Underweight Models Part II

Published by Cammie at 8:28 pm under Public Communications Assignment Edit This

Part II

There have been many different reactions concerning the weight limit being placed on models. I, personally, think it’s a great idea and should be immediately adopted by every one within the fashion industry. However, there are many modeling agencies as well as models, which aren’t pleased with the new weight regulations.

For instances, the CNN article covering this story states that a member of New York’s elite modeling agency, Cathy Gould released the following statement, “I understand they was to set this tone of healthy beautiful women but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer?” It seems that some are worried that those models which are naturally thin and underweight are being discriminated against.

I then decided to call up a local upcoming and new model, Diandra Steavu, who was glad to share her opinion on the subject. After having asked her what her opinion was on the new weight regulations, she replied, “I actually really that…a lot of my friends were being influenced into thinking that in order to be beautiful, you had to be extremely thin. However, I think that some girls in my modeling agency were angry at it. They had based their careers on being extremely thin and now have to change all that for the new weight regulations.”

Most people worry that younger girls and teenagers idolize and try to imitate the super thin models they see. Many of them are turning to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia in order to loose weight. I believe that the fashion industry has a responsibility to portray pictures of healthy looking models because of its influence over people and over what society believes is beautiful.
